How Dolby Laboratories Changed the Way the World Hears Sound
Few companies have had as profound and sustained an influence on the audio-visual industry as Dolby Laboratories. Founded in 1965 by engineer Ray Dolby, the company has repeatedly redefined what recorded and cinematic audio can sound like — from the quiet revolution of cassette tape noise reduction in the late 1960s to the object-based immersion of Dolby Atmos half a century later. Understanding Dolby's history is, in many ways, to understand the history of modern audio itself.
The Problem Dolby Set Out to Solve
Ray Dolby established his company in London with a specific technical problem in mind: magnetic tape noise. Analogue magnetic recording, for all its merits, introduced a constant background hiss — audible on tape recorders, reel-to-reel machines, and particularly on the emerging cassette tape format, which used narrow, slow-moving tape that was especially prone to noise.
His solution, introduced in professional form in 1966 and for consumers via the Dolby B system in 1968, was an elegant companding scheme: quiet sounds are boosted during recording (where they'd otherwise be masked by tape hiss), and then cut by an equal amount during playback. The result was dramatically quieter background noise — transformative for cassette audio quality.
Dolby B, C, and S: The Consumer Noise Reduction Era
Dolby B became the industry standard for consumer cassette decks throughout the 1970s and 1980s, appearing on virtually every quality tape deck ever made. Dolby C (1980) improved on B's performance, offering greater noise reduction depth. Dolby S (1989) was the final evolution — approaching reel-to-reel quality from the humble cassette format.
These systems transformed the cassette from a dictation tool into a genuine high-fidelity medium, enabling the Walkman era and the growth of pre-recorded cassette music as a commercial format.
Dolby Stereo and the Cinema Revolution
While consumer noise reduction was making Dolby a household name, the company was simultaneously reshaping the cinema experience. Dolby Stereo, introduced for film in 1975, encoded four channels of audio (left, centre, right, and surround) onto two optical tracks using matrix encoding. The first major film to use it was Tommy (1975), but it was Star Wars (1977) that made it famous.
Cinema sound would never be the same. Dolby Stereo set the standard for theatrical exhibition for over a decade, and its consumer equivalent — Dolby Surround — brought matrix surround sound into living rooms via VHS and Laserdisc in the 1980s.
Dolby Pro Logic and the Home Theater Boom
The 1987 introduction of Dolby Pro Logic improved on Dolby Surround's matrix decoding, adding active steering logic that more cleanly separated the four channels. Combined with falling AV receiver prices and the growing home video market, Dolby Pro Logic drove the first major home theater boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Dolby Digital: The Discrete Revolution
The leap to Dolby Digital (initially called AC-3) in the mid-1990s was a fundamental change in approach. Rather than encoding surround channels via analogue matrix tricks, Dolby Digital provided six fully discrete digital audio channels — the 5.1 standard. There was no crosstalk between channels, no steering artefacts, and far greater channel separation.
Dolby Digital debuted in cinemas in 1992 with Batman Returns, and reached consumers via the Laserdisc format and later DVD. DVD's adoption of Dolby Digital as a standard audio format cemented 5.1 surround sound as the norm for home theater through the 2000s.
Dolby TrueHD and the HD Audio Era
With the arrival of Blu-ray in 2006, Dolby introduced Dolby TrueHD — a lossless audio codec capable of encoding up to 7.1 channels with full fidelity to the studio master. This was a meaningful step: for the first time, consumers at home could hear exactly the same audio mix that existed on the studio's hard drive.
Dolby Atmos: Sound as Objects
The most significant leap since Dolby Digital arrived in 2012 with Dolby Atmos. The key conceptual shift was from channel-based to object-based audio. Rather than mixing sound into fixed channels (left, right, centre, etc.), Dolby Atmos allows sound designers to place individual sounds as three-dimensional objects in space, with precise X/Y/Z positioning data attached.
The system's renderer then intelligently distributes those objects to whatever speaker configuration is available — from a two-speaker soundbar to a 64-speaker commercial cinema. This flexibility makes Atmos both scalable and remarkably durable as a format standard.
Atmos debuted in cinemas with Brave (2012), reached consumers on Blu-ray in 2014, and is now available via streaming services including Netflix and Apple TV+, encoded within Dolby TrueHD or the lossy Dolby Digital Plus container for streaming delivery.
The Continuing Legacy
From silencing cassette hiss to placing raindrops precisely above your head in a streaming film, Dolby Laboratories' sixty-year arc is a remarkable story of engineering ambition meeting commercial reality. Ray Dolby's original insight — that noise and imperfection in audio reproduction were problems worth solving systematically — has driven a company that has never stopped pushing at the boundary of what recorded sound can be.
